My sister-in-law, married to my converted LDS brother, is mixed. No one actually asked what her mix was when they married several decades ago. But then, they were not converted at the time. The LDS religion had a lot of attractions for this brother and my kind, gentle SIL was happy to go along. She is now quite active in her church. Recently, she told me that she was black, not Latina as my mother had assumed, but that it was okay because her church had given her a soul. I was gobsmacked but then not surprised. There is a need to believe inborn in some people. That need to believe blinds them to the realities inherent in the acceptance they give to those who fill that need. She certainly knew what happened in 1978 and what that meant about the evil at the center of LDS doctrine and leadership. I was also saddened because of all my questionable relatives I'd have said her soul is the sweetest and purest and no one needed to give it to her. She had it all along.
