I was a mental health social worker in a famous London Hospital. I had a patient who was deeply depressed. The psychiatrist thought that ECT (Elecro-Convulsive Therapy otherwise known as shock therapy) was the only treatment that would work to end the depression but the patient did not consent. In Britain, Social Workers have a special responsibility to ensure that a patient's consent or non-consent is respected. But this psychiatrist insisted that he was right and made the appointment for the shock treatment to take place. I called the doctor who was to administer this treatment and explained the situation. The patient arrived for the treatment and the astute doctor there asked if there was consent. 'No' was the reply. The patient was sent back to the hospital without the treatment and a few weeks later was discharged, better but not cured. The psychiatrist was absolutely infuriated at my 'interference'. In Britain, doctors, particularly psychiatrists are supposed to be at the apex of the pyramid. By doing my duty and advocating for patient rights I had defied him and thus had stepped out of the accepted order. I was not sorry and I'd do it again. I'll watch this movie with Helena Bonham Carter. I'm sure it will stir difficult memories but that's often the price we pay for educating ourselves about injustices and for also reminding ourselves that we are not finished righting wrongs, not in any way. Thank you for your article.
