First of all, I am an atheist fascinated by theology, history, and how people convince themselves of 'truths'. For the purposes of this response to your article, I might concede that there is some likelihood that an actual person named Jesus probably existed. During his lifetime, it's recorded (by the Romans) that there were a number of 'miracle workers' practicing in and around the area he lived in. It was one of those ages, apparently. Perhaps they were all preaching about acceptance and welcome of marginalized people. That would be something, wouldn't it? But maybe not, and that might have been what made him memorable. But, to get back to this individual you write about, it should be remembered that in several Christian writings, Jesus was referred to as a 'doctor' who worked to heal people. He's written about as actually 'laying on hands'. How does this obviously unhinged preacher reconcile that with his overt squeamishness over bodies? Finally, wasn't Jesus about 'love'? What is loving about wishing a violent, slow, and painful death on anyone? Sadly, this man and most of the other teachings of churches these days are evidence that the leaders don't seem to know anything about who they are supposedly worshiping. I wonder what Jesus would say if he could come back and meet some of these self-righteous, hate-filled, bullies and idiots. Maybe I'll write a piece about that encounter. Maybe you should, Dan? Thanks for this and all you do.
